The Tie-bar-less Way for Fitting Production, ENGEL Victory

The Tie-bar-less Way for Fitting Production, ENGEL Victory

Small injection moulding machine for large moulds
Moulds for plastic fittings are often very large but require in relation low clamping force. The ENGEL tie-bar-less victory machine series has a large and easily accessible mould space. You only invest in the clamping force that the mould requires and not in a machine where the mould fits. For bulky injection moulds, ENGEL also offer wide-platen versions that are approximately 20% larger but have the same footprint.

Frequent mould changes can reduce the productivity of your injection moulding machines. Thanks to the large and easily accessible mould space of the victory machine series, moulds can be changed quickly. In addition, the “guided mould change” function of the ENGEL CC300 control unit makes the change process easier for your personnel with step-by-step instructions and semi-automated processes. You reduce your downtimes and increase your productivity.

Precise process control for stable PVC processing
The ENGEL victory machine offers special features for processing PVC materials. This includes a specially developed plasticizing unit that is perfectly tailored to the requirements of PVC and enables uniform and precise processing of the PVC melt. In addition, the machine features PVC-specific screw geometries that minimize material degradation and ensure high-quality production results. Another important aspect is the precise process control, which allows temperature, pressure and speed to be accurately controlled. This is crucial to keep the PVC temperature within recommended limits and ensure the quality of the final products. Overall, the ENGEL victory machine offers stable processing of PVC materials, which minimizes material losses and waste and increases the efficiency and profitability of the production process.

Special Exhibition: “100 Years Of The Hehl Family Company”

Special Exhibition: “100 Years Of The Hehl Family Company”

  • Centenary year: Fakuma 2023 brings the 100th anniversary celebrations to a close.
  • Special exhibition: Arburg looks back on a 100-year success story.
  • Historic: C1 single-lever machine live in action.

Arburg will be present at Fakuma 2023 with nine exhibits on Stand 3101 in Hall A3, plus eleven additional machines on partner stands. To mark “100 years of the Hehl family company”, milestones in the unique success story will also be presented: from the “start-up” in 1923 in the family home to today’s world-leading manufacturer of machines for plastics processing. A historic C1 single-lever machine will also be in live operation.

In the special exhibition space, four themed areas – Black Forest, Arburg Cosmos, Allrounder and Environment – will offer exciting insights into the history and development of the innovative family company over the past 100 years.

Black Forest home: People and flashes of genius
Trade visitors who “only” know Arburg as a globally leading manufacturer of injection moulding machines today can still learn a lot of new things during the special exhibition. For example, the fact that Arthur Hehl founded a company in Lossburg in the Black Forest in 1923, initially to manufacture surgical instruments in his own home. Or that in 1954, during Germany’s economic miracle, a “flash of inspiration” by son Karl Hehl led to the invention of the first small C1 injection moulding machine, which was able to overmould flash contacts with plastic. And that it was his brother Eugen Hehl who, with his great marketing talent, carried the presence of Arburg and the Allrounder out into the world.

Arburg Cosmos: Continuous growth in Lossburg

The “Arburg Cosmos” area will show how the company grows with a vision. As early as 1949, the first apprentices are hired and trained by Karl Hehl himself. In 1957, the prospering company moves from a residential building to the current factory premises. Arburg develops the Allrounder principle with a pivoting clamping unit and reversible injection unit in 1962, thereby also becoming a pioneer in multi-component injection moulding. One distinctive feature is that Arburg still builds all its controllers itself – from the first Polytronica in 1972 to the Selogica in 1992 and the Gestica, which has been setting standards in the industry since 2016.

In 1966, Eugen Hehl creates a grid system for the building structures, which allows the company to expand continuously. In 1985, the first subsidiary is founded in France. In 2023, Arburg has around 3,600 employees at 35 locations worldwide and still manufactures centrally in Lossburg on a current floor space of around 210,000 square metres.

 Allrounder: Historic machine exhibit

A very special exhibit will show just how viable the company’s historic machine technology has remained to this day: a manually operated C1 single-lever machine, reconstructed by Arburg trainees themselves, will be producing shopping trolley chips from post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) based on PP “live” at Fakuma 2023.

Environment

Arburg has also been playing a pioneering role in environmental matters for decades. From facade heating (1976) and the introduction of a building management system (1983) to the use of rainwater (1997), wind power (2001) and geothermal energy (2009). Since 2019, Arburg has been bringing together all its activities relating to resource conservation and the circular economy in the arburgGREENworld program. Many exhibits at Fakuma 2023 will demonstrate what this means for injection moulding in practice, for example in the processing of recyclates and sustainable materials, as well as with innovative technologies for traceability and separation by type.

Westfalia Fruit Trials Exclusive Technology Targeting Food Safety and Sustainability

Westfalia Fruit, a leading multinational supplier of avocados, has conducted the first successful trials of an innovative and natural method of ensuring food safety within the supply chain.

Current industry practice is to manually deep clean avocado ripening rooms to maintain high levels of food safety and eliminate residue from naturally occurring fruit mould. Westfalia’s new method uses a probiotic uniquely distributed within a water mist circulated throughout ripening room which delivers several clear benefits.

Andrew Mitchell, Head of Innovation at Westfalia Fruit explains “Our innovative probiotic liquid is similar to that found in yoghurts which can help with the natural balance of our digestive system. This type of probiotic is also very good at attacking yeasts and moulds. We have developed the application of this natural probiotic further as a liquid, Westfalia Fruit is the only avocado supplier able to do this.”

In an initial study there was a 65% reduction in micro levels in the trial room compared to the control room. The study also found that mould on the individual fruit was significantly reduced. Avocados that had been treated with the probiotic remained mould free for up to fifteen days, which resulted in a reduction of internal rot of around 20%. Using this method also has several other clear benefits – it eliminates the need for chemical cleaning materials, avoids the need to shut down ripening rooms for cleaning and can also be applied to hard to reach areas such as ventilation ducts and fans.

Westfalia is conducting a second trial, applying the probiotic liquid from the roof of the ripening room and expects this to achieve a 90% reduction in micro levels compared to the control room. Fruit quality will be continuously monitored over a four week trial in preparation for initial roll out across Westfalia’s UK facilities.

“From there, we will be managing a role out to our European operations and extend trials across a range of products including citrus and mango. Looking even further ahead with the benefit of Westfalia’s integrated supply chain, the unique misting technique can be applied within shipping containers, giving fruit the benefit of the probiotic application before reaching its final destination, Andrew continues. This project is a clear example of how Westfalia continues to ensure consistent high quality avocados are available for consumers to enjoy 365 days of the year.

We are very excited about this breakthrough, as well as the immediate benefits we anticipate a further reduction in potential waste product whilst successfully and naturally maintaining food safety, all of which directly aligns with our ambitious sustainability goals”.

ALTANA Successfully Places ESG Promissory Note Loan for 180 Million Euros

ALTANA Successfully Places ESG Promissory Note Loan for 180 Million Euros

The specialty chemicals group ALTANA has secured a promissory note loan totaling 180 million euros. The transaction, which was placed with around 70 German and international investors, was oversubscribed several times. In response to the robust demand during the borrowing process, the initial volume of 100 million euros was increased to 180 million euros. The promissory note loan is divided into tranches with maturities spanning three, five, and seven years.

The tranches encompass both variable and fixed interest rates. Thanks to the substantial interest in this transaction, it was possible to set the interest rate at the lower end of the marketing range, resulting in an average fixed interest rate of 4.40 percent per annum. The placement was conducted through Deutsche Bank and Landbank Baden-Württemberg.We are delighted with the great response,” stated Stefan Genten, Chief Financial Officer of ALTANA AG. “This not only reaffirms our resilient business model, especially in economically challenging times, but also acknowledges our dedication to climate protection, energy efficiency, and occupational safety.”

As a sustainability-linked loan (“ESG-linked loan”), the amount of the interest rate is also contingent upon the attainment of certain sustainability targets of the ALTANA Group and thus on the company’s performance with regard to environmental, social, and corporate control processes (ESG for short).

“The promissory note loan fits excellently into our existing financing structure,” said Claudia Uhlich, Head of Group Treasury at ALTANA AG. “We have further diversified our financing sources and were able to tailor the individual tranches exactly to our specific requirements.”

The recently placed promissory note loan supports ALTANA’s overall corporate financing and serves as the foundation for the company’s further, sustainable growth. In 2021, ALTANA had already established a credit line with a sustainability component in collaboration with a consortium of house banks as well as a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) designated for green research projects. By doing so, ALTANA completely renewed the Group’s long-term financing.
