Award-Winning Innovations in Mood-Boosting Skin Care

Award-Winning Innovations in Mood-Boosting Skin Care

The face is a window to the soul. As social animals, humans are very adept at reading moods and even signs of illness or well-being just by the look on someone’s face. Eyes play a big part, but so does the skin. Flushed or pale, vibrant or dull – how we feel is almost instantly expressed in our complexion. The existence of such a brain-to-skin axis is backed up by science and even helps explain why some skin conditions can have mental origins. As studies show, however, this also works in reverse: healthy skin can positively affect our mood. This led Clariant to develop its holistic concept dubbed »The Joyologist.«. It involves skin care formulations and entire beauty routines that soothe the skin and the mind.

»Self-care is hugely important, especially in a world full of troubling news that affect our mental well-being,« says Amandine Werle, a marketing specialist for Clariant Actives & Natural Origins and one of the minds behind The Joyologist. »Consumers look for ways to take better care of themselves, and beauty rituals are big part of that. Treating your skin with products that provide sensations of comfort can help improve the mood by stimulating the release of feel-good molecules such as serotonin and melatonin. This, in turn, positively impacts the skin and starts a virtuous cycle.«

Roots and sunshine
Rootness Mood+ is one recent innovation by Clariant that takes full advantage of this effect. It is based on a natural active ingredient obtained from the roots of Sanguisorba officinalis using patented Plant Milking technology. The plant, more commonly known as the great burnet, is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its hemostatic, astringent properties and to help promote healing. (»Sanguisorba« literally means »blood stauncher« in Latin.) However, Rootness Mood+ makes use of a different effect: as studies trials have shown, root extracts from Sanguisorba officinalis help trigger the skin’s photoreceptors and promote the uptake of vitamin D.

Vitamin D plays a key role in the production of certain hormones. Around 90% of the human daily requirement in vitamin D is produced in the skin and triggered by exposure to sunlight. That is why natural light provides essential health benefits, from warding off seasonal affective disorder (SAD) to improving sleep. However, with modern lifestyles tending towards ever more time spent indoors, it is estimated that around 75% of the world’s population is already deficient in vitamin D.

Sanguisorba Roots.

Proof in the lab
The idea behind Rootness Mood+ is to use root extracts from Sanguisorba officinalis to enhance the beneficial effects of sunlight on human skin. To test this idea, Clariant’s research team, based in Toulouse, France, first treated skin explants in the lab with Rootness Mood+ under artificial sunlight. They found that specific photoreceptors and transporters for vitamin D within the cells were activated, and that it also led to an increase in serotonin and melatonin by 55% and 120%, respectively.

A subsequent clinical study enrolled 36 female participants between ages 30 and 50, all reporting low mood and presenting a dull facial complexion. »The trial was conducted as a double-blind study by a contract research lab as an independent third party using two randomized groups,« explains Adam Buso, formulation specialist for Clariant Actives and Natural Origins. Twice daily, one group of participants applied a product containing 1% Rootness Mood+ to their entire face, while the other group used a placebo. Over the course of about a month, the researchers documented skin and mood effects using questionnaires, visual assessments, lab tests, and even an electroencephalography (EEG) device that measures certain brainwaves related to relaxation.

A boost on the go
The effects were astounding: relaxation levels, as recorded by the EEG device, increased by 279% for the study group, while there was no change observed among the control group. »This mood-boosting effect is equal to that of a yoga session,« Buso explains. 73% of volunteers reported feeling refueled after using the product containing Rootness Mood+ compared with 50% using the placebo. There were visible improvements to the skin complexion and a significant decrease in carbonylated proteins, a group of stress-related compounds found in the outermost layer of the skin that are known to cause a dull complexion.

Based on these findings, Clariant has developed the »Feel-Good Magic Stick.« This aqueous gel stick makes it particularly easy to apply Rootness Mood+ whenever you feel the need for a boost in well-being. The stick contains additional actives such as B-Circadin, which helps re-synchronize the skin cell’s biological clock, and HerbEx Curcuma Extract, which increases the skin’s stress resilience.

Going deeper
»While our stick is something you can use any time and on the go, we also have solutions that target the need to relax more deeply, for example, after a long and busy day,« says Bruna Aline Da Silva Merigiolli, formulation specialist for Clariant Actives and Natural Origins. She was involved in developing what Clariant calls the »Forget-It-All Relaxing Mask.« The main active ingredient here is Clariant’s Beracare CBA a unique blend of copaiba oil and passion fruit seed oil.

Sanguisorba.

Copaiba oil is extracted from the resin of the copaiba tree native to Brazil. »It is particularly rich in β-caryophyllene, a phytocannabinoid known to interact with the skin’s endocannabinoid system,« Merigiolli explains. This allows it to modulate cellular signals to reduce irritation and calm the skin. According to recent trials, it does so even more effectively than cannabidiol or CBD-based products, which have recently grown in popularity but are derived from actual cannabis plants and are increasingly scrutinized by regulators. Plus, the actives found in Beraca CBA also help to rebalance the sensitive skin microbiome by down-regulating certain bacteria linked to inflammation. »The Joyologist,« with its holistic approach to skincare and mood-boosting science, proves that beauty really is more than skin deep.

Project Air Granted Environmental Permit

Project Air Granted Environmental Permit

The Land and Environment Court at Vänersborg District Court in Vänersborg, Sweden, has granted a changed environmental permit for Perstorp´s chemical plant in Stenungsund to allow for the production of more sustainable methanol. Perstorp sought the changed permit to enable the implementation of its Project Air initiative, due to be commissioned at the end of 2026. The permit also includes construction and operation of an electrolysis plant for the production of hydrogen.

Specialty chemicals innovator Perstorp is constructing a new plant with CCU (Carbon Capture Utilization) at the plant in Stenungsund. Here, carbon dioxide emissions from the company’s own operations, together with other residual streams of biogas and renewable hydrogen, will be turned into sustainable methanol. The methanol will be used as a raw material for other chemicals and makes it possible for thousands of end products and value chains to become more sustainable. This is a major step for Perstorp as a global sustainability leader in the specialty chemicals market and toward ending its dependence on fossil feedstock.

“Methanol is an important raw material for Perstorp. Through Project Air, we will be able to replace all the fossil methanol that we currently use as a raw material in Europe and by doing this reduce 500 000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. It is an important step for us to reach our climate targets and the fact that we now have our environmental permit in place means that we can continue with finalizing our plans,” says Håkan Kihlberg, Vice President Strategic Projects.

“Project Air will contribute to the transformation in a broader sense since our products produced from the Air methanol will be part of a vast range of value chains and end products. This project is followed with great interest by many, as it is scalable and replicable. This initiative will lead to a more sustainable chemical industry by breaking its fossil dependence and finding more circular ways of making its products,” adds Anna Berggren, Vice President Sustainability.

SABIC Expands Chemically Resistant LNP CRX Copolymer Portfolio to Help Industrial and Mobility Customers Design for Durability

SABIC Expands Chemically Resistant LNP CRX Copolymer Portfolio to Help Industrial and Mobility Customers Design for Durability

SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, will feature new LNP CRX copolymer resins at The smarter E Europe 2023 show (Booth #B6.115), this week in Munich, Germany. These specialized resins give customers in the mobility and industrial sectors new material options that can resist both harsh chemicals and challenging environmental conditions. The new specialized polycarbonate (PC) copolymer-based LNP CRX products deliver the chemical resistance expected from this portfolio, in combination with exceptional weatherability (UL74C F1 rating, low-temperature ductility and ability to withstand high levels of heat and humidity). These properties may help enhance the durability of components such as charging sockets for electric vehicles (EV) and housings for outdoor battery storage equipment.

In turn, greater durability helps to extend the useful life of parts, thereby advancing sustainability goals through lower demand for raw materials, energy, water and other resources. It also helps customers protect their brand reputation and minimize costly recalls and warranty claims. Because of these durability and sustainability benefits, the new additions to the LNP CRX copolymer resin portfolio can be great options for applications across several market sectors, including healthcare and consumer electronics.

“One important aspect of sustainability is finding new ways to extend the service life of products,” said Joshua Chiaw, Director, Business Management, LNP & NORYL, Specialties, SABIC. “Although durability hasn’t received as much attention as recycling, for example, it could reduce environmental impact across the application lifecycle. SABIC’s sustainability strategy not only focuses on incorporating recycled, upcycled and renewable content in our thermoplastics, but also on the development of highly durable materials that help prevent premature disposal and waste. We continue to expand our LNP CRX family with new products and new target applications to help more customers design for durability.”

Growing Portfolio of Durable, Chemically Resistant PC Copolymers
The signature property of all LNP CRX copolymer resins is high resistance to aggressive chemicals. In fact, the first grades in the portfolio offered enhanced chemical resistance for medical devices exposed to repeated cleanings with aggressive disinfectants. However, this growing family of LNP CRX resins is also resistant to motor oil, gasoline, turpentine, caustic soda and brake fluid used in the mobility sector; industrial chemicals such as brake fluid and tar remover; and lotions, sunscreen, hand sanitizers and skin oils that affect consumer electronics devices. These amorphous copolymer resins often deliver chemical resistance comparable to that of crystalline materials, such as flame retardant (FR) polycarbonate/polybutylene terephthalate (PC/PBT) blends, and can surpass the performance of other amorphous resins such as FR PC and impact-modified FR polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/AB) blends.

In addition, all LNP CRX grades provide non-brominated/non-chlorinated flame retardancy and good processability for both injection molding and extrusion. They meet both ultraviolet (UV) and water immersion requirements (F1 rating) for outdoor suitability under UL 746C.

At the show, SABIC will highlight three of its newest LNP ELCRES CRX grades, which all provide low-temperature ductility (down to -60°C) and an F1 rating:

LNP ELCRES CRX9416U copolymer resin. This upcoming product is planned for commercialization later in 2023. It is an injection molding grade offering UL94 V0 compliance at 1.5 mm, and heat resistance of 145°C, as measured by Vicat B/120 (ISO 306). It will be custom colorable with an all-color UL Solutions Yellow Card.

LNP ELCRES CRX9016E copolymer resin. This new grade, available in black color, is formulated for extrusion processing. It provides UL94 V0 compliance at 1.5 mm, low shrinkage, long-term ductility and heat resistance of 145°C, as measured by Vicat B/120 (ISO 306). It was commercialized in early 2023.

LNP ELCRES CRX7416U copolymer resin. Introduced in 2022, this custom-colorable, injection molding grade provides UL94 V0 compliance at 1.0 mm and very high flow properties (MVR of 13 g/10 min.), potentially enabling designs with thinner walls and complex geometries to reduce material usage. This product has a lower heat resistance than that of the other two grades (131°C, as measured by Vicat B/120 (ISO 306)).

Bio-based versions of these materials, supplied under the LNP ELCRIN CRX brand, provide equivalent performance to fossil-based grades. They use renewable feedstock derived from non-fossil waste materials that do not compete with the food chain and are certified under ISCC PLUS. These bio-based grades can reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 38 percent compared to the fossil-based versions.

SABIC will display several example components made with these materials, including injection molded enclosures, housings and connectors, and extruded profiles and sheet products.

“Our LNP CRX copolymer resin family, which initially was positioned in medical devices requiring resistance to disinfectants, is steadily growing with new grades to serve demanding needs required in other markets,” said Luc Govaerts, Technology Director, Specialties, SABIC. “Our latest additions leverage our proprietary copolymer technology to provide excellent resistance to chemicals and extreme environmental exposures faced by high-performing durable applications such as electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and EV and e-bike batteries. These high-performing more-durable materials help extend service lifetimes for our customers.”
