Aduro Clean Technologies Joins Delegation at Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-4)

Aduro Clean Technologies Inc. (“Aduro” or the “Company”)  a Canadian technology company using the power of chemistry to transform lower value feedstocks, like waste plastics, heavy bitumen, and renewable oils, into resources for the 21st century, is joining a delegation of observers from civil society, environmental groups, academics and business at the fourth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-4) in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada from April 23rd to 29th, 2024.

INC-4 welcomes over 4,200 delegates, including 1,400 government members and 2,800 observers, who will discuss a draft treaty prepared after the third meeting of the INC. This draft serves as a basis for negotiations, aiming to finalize an agreement that encompasses various aspects of plastic management such as design, waste management, extended producer responsibility, and capacity building, especially for developing countries. The treaty hopes to promote a circular economy for plastics, emphasizing recycling and reusability to prevent plastics from polluting the environment while retaining their beneficial properties.

Abe Dyck, Head of Corporate Development at Aduro is attending the event and will hold one-on-one discussions with industry delegates to promote its Hydrochemolytic technology (HCT), an advanced chemical recycling technology. HCT efficiently breaks down complex waste streams into valuable chemicals, doing so in an environmentally responsible manner that significantly reduces both energy use and waste generation. The technology is particularly suited to handling types of waste plastics traditionally considered non-recyclable, addressing a key topic at the event.

These historic negotiations at the INC-4 come at a critical juncture for both the world and the Company. The public and their representative governments are demanding real action from plastic producers to improve how plastics are made, used, and managed. This global attention, supported by the backing of the United Nations, the private sector, and financial institutions, bodes well for companies like Aduro. With its technology platform at the forefront of innovation, Aduro is addressing many of the critical issues that contribute to today’s low recycling rates for plastic waste.

Aduro is aligned with INC-4’s mission to forge a sustainable path for plastic waste management. The Company advocates for an agreement that not only aims to end plastic pollution but also enables the continued beneficial use of plastics. This includes a commitment to providing essential waste management services to the roughly 3 billion people currently lacking these facilities, directly addressing one of the primary drivers of pollution.

Key Objectives at INC-4

  • Promote Circular Economy: Aduro supports the target to increase circular practices that include the thoughtful design of products to facilitate their reuse and recycling and implementing innovative technologies to repurpose these materials into new products.
  • Advocate for Supportive Policies: Aduro supports the development of action plans and policies such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which can be essential for advancing effective recycling solutions tailored to each country’s needs.
  • Foster International Collaboration: Aduro is dedicated to collaborating with industry and government to encourage the integration of chemical recycling in national frameworks.

The agreement champions a technology-neutral approach that bolsters various recycling methods, including an emphasis on incentivizing the demand for recycled plastics through national action plans. And encourages greater investment in innovative technologies including chemical recycling, a key alternative to landfilling or incinerating non-mechanically recyclable plastics such as medical waste. This integrated approach aims to expand recycling capabilities and drive economic benefits across the community.

“Our participation at INC-4 is a fantastic opportunity to add to the conversation on advanced chemical recycling and to highlight its vital role in achieving a sustainable circular economy,” said Ofer Vicus, CEO of Aduro Clean Technologies. “We are excited to share our insights and the advancements we have made with Hydrochemolytic technology. We believe it can play a significant role in recovering more of the waste plastic currently ending up in the environment while supporting the INC-4 objectives.”

What is the company turnover in 2022, annual growth rate despite challenging business scenario and growth target for fiscal 2023?

The BOPP & BOPET business had an excess supply in FY23 due to the bunching of numerous new manufacturing lines. Although demand continues to rise, the bunching of supply reduced margins and impacted the whole sector. Cosmo First, with more than two-thirds of our sales from specialised films, resisted margin pressure and outperformed the industry substantially.

Our consolidated revenue increased marginally to INR 3,065 crores (USD 368 Mn) in FY’23 from INR 3,038 crores (US$ 364 Mn) in FY’22, after expanding at a CAGR of more than 13.3% from FY18 to FY22 (speciality film sales increased at a CAGR of 18% over three years). Despite a hard economic situation, our EBITDA for the year stood at INR 434 crores (US$ 60.76 Mn) demonstrating the resilience of speciality films. ROCE (Return on Capital Employed) and ROE (Return on Equity) were 16% and 20%, respectively. We are aiming for a top line of roughly INR 5,000 crores (US$ 600 Mn) in the next 3-4 years, with new businesses accounting for 15-20% of sales.

Do Cosmo introduce any new products in the US market?

In the US, we have multiple sales and distribution centres at different locations and carry slitting for local needs. For the products, in the US market, we have introduced the thermal lamination films which is one of our flagship products. We are strategizing for the high-margin films in the US market. All our products are available in the US market.

Comments on the evolving Indian market and how Cosmo aspired to achieve its goals and objectives?

The Indian market has been steadily growing in recent years. The demand for film and  packaging solutions has been on the rise, driven by various factors, including increased consumerism, e-commerce expansion, and a growing middle-class population. We have recognised this growth and have strategically positioned ourselves to leverage the opportunities presented by this upward trajectory.

In recent years, India has well positioned itself as a global market hub and Cosmo has emerged as one of the leading players within the Indian market. We have not only catered to domestic demand but also successfully penetrated international markets. Our ability to provide high-quality film and packaging solutions has made us a preferred choice for clients not only in India but also across the world. This expansion reflects our ambition to be a key player in the global supply chain.

Further, with ongoing changes and uncertainties in the China market, many businesses are actively seeking alternatives. We have ensured to keep our supply chains running and stand as a strong and reliable alternative to the Chinese market for our customers. Our commitment to quality, competitive pricing, and a customer-centric approach have attracted businesses looking for dependable sourcing options. This strategic positioning aligns with our long term goals to become a leading player in the global film and packaging industry.

We plan to raise our entire film capacity by approximately 50% by FY’26, at a cost of around INR 500 crore (USD 70 Mn), and our film income will increase by approximately 50% by FY’27. Our diversification into new industries including specialty chemicals and pet care has progressed as planned. Bothsegments are growing and contributing to the company’s long-term wealth generation potential. Future goals in the pet care area include expanding the experience centres to 100+ in a few years and pushing the online business.

New Electric Machine for Asia

Local to local: Allrounder Golden Electric Evo

• New: Entry-level electric machines for the Asian market.
• Focus: “Made by Arburg” – cost effective and quickly available.
• Premiere: On view for the first time at Chinaplas.

The Allrounder Golden Electric Evo series, which is celebrating its premiere at Chinaplas 2024, is fully tailored to Asia. The electric machines combine the “Made by Arburg” quality seal known throughout the global market with unbeatable value for money and short delivery times, making the purchase of an Arburg  machine easy, quick and cost effective for Asian customers. In action at the trade fair in Shanghai will be an Allrounder 470 E Golden Electric Evo, demonstrating a sophisticated LSR application automated with a Flexlift 10 linear robotic system, also specially designed for Asia.

Arburg set the initial course for its “local-to-local” activities back in 2020, with the opening of the Arburg Technology Factory (ATF) in Pinghu. Initially, activities focused on adapting Allrounder machines to customer-specific requirements and implementing turnkey systems in cooperation with local suppliers of moulds and peripheral equipment. This was followed in 2023 by the Flexlift linear robotic system and now the Allrounder Golden Electric Evo. Both product series are specifically tailored to the requirements of customers in Asia, and are also exclusively available there.

Assembly in the ATF ensures quick availability of the entry-level electric machines. The portfolio includes the sizes 370, 470, 520 and 570, which cover clamping forces ranging from 600 to 2,000 kN. The injection units range from size 100 to size 800, for shot weights of up to around 430 grams of PS.

Precision, speed and energy efficiency
The Allrounder Golden Electric Evo is extremely precise, thanks to its high-quality injection units. The servo-electric drives for “inject”, “dose” and “open and close mould” deliver fast acceleration, high speeds, and simultaneous movements, all of which add up to short cycle times. Compared to standard hydraulic machines, the dry cycle times are up to two seconds shorter. What’s more, the energy requirement can be reduced by up to 50 per cent with the toggle-type clamping unit, the high efficiency of the servo-electric drive and recovery of braking energy.

Just for Asia: The Flexlift robotic system
Another product designed for the Asian market is the Flexlift, a reliable, quick and precise robotic system that offers excellent value for money. BASF, SABIC, and Linde Celebrate the Start-Up of the World’s First Large-Scale Electrically Heated Steam Cracking Furnace

• Demonstration plant with 6 megawatts input of renewable electrical energy to test material behavior and process on an industrial scale.
• Joint development and construction of electric steam cracking furnaces at BASF’s Verbund site in Ludwigshafen.
• Technology with the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 90% compared to conventional steam crackers.

Today, BASF, SABIC, and Linde have inaugurated the world’s first demonstration plant for large-scale electrically heated steam cracking furnaces. Following three years of development, engineering, and construction work, the regular operation of the demonstration plant is now ready to start at BASF’s Verbund site in Ludwigshafen, Germany. In March 2021 the three companies signed a joint agreement to develop and demonstrate solutions for electrically heated steam cracking furnaces.

Steam crackers play a central role in the production of basic chemicals and require a significant amount of energy to break down hydrocarbons into olefins and aromatics. Typically, the reaction is conducted in furnaces at temperatures of about 850 degrees Celsius. Up to now, these temperatures have been reached by using conventional fuels. The demonstration plant aims to show that continuous olefin production is possible using electricity as a heat source. By using electricity from renewable sources, the new technology has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions of one of the most energy-intensive production processes in the chemical industry by at least 90% compared to technologies commonly used today.

The demonstration plant, which produces olefins, such as ethylene, propylene, and possibly also higher olefins from saturated hydrocarbon feedstock, is fully integrated into the existing steam crackers in Ludwigshafen. The upcoming operation serves the goal of gathering data and experiences about material behavior and processes under commercial operating conditions for the final development of this innovative technology to industrial market maturity. In two separate demonstration furnaces, two different heating concepts will be tested. While in one furnace, direct heating applies an electric current directly to the cracking coils, in the second furnace, indirect heating uses radiative heat of heating elements placed around the coils.

The two electrically heated furnaces together process around 4 tons of hydrocarbon feedstock per hour and consume 6 megawatts of renewable energy.

To support the development of the novel furnace technology, the project was granted €14.8 million by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action under its “Decarbonization in Industry” funding program. The program is supporting energy-intensive industries in Germany in their efforts to achieve carbon neutrality.

“With the development of electrically operated steam cracking furnaces, we are getting our hands on a key technology that will help to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the chemical industry. It fills me with pride and joy that we have achieved this success together with our partners SABIC and Linde. The demonstration plant here in Ludwigshafen will provide us with valuable experience on the final step towards the industrial application of this technology”, said Dr. Martin Brudermüller, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE.

Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh, CEO of SABIC stated; “The e-furnace’s technology holds huge potential for the sustainability of the global petrochemical industry. It can demonstrate the role that renewable electricity can play in higher efficiency and low-emission chemical processing. Through close collaboration, teamwork, intellectual property development, and advancing the best technical solutions holistically, the teams at SABIC, BASF and Linde have brought this project to this key stage. We are proud to be here together today to celebrate the power of collective action on our journey toward a circular carbon economy.”

“The question of whether it is possible to electrify the petrochemical industry and operate a steam cracker with sustainably generated electricity has been answered with a resounding yes. This outstanding joint project is significant proof of how together we can develop ground-breaking technologies that will advance us on the journey towards net-zero CO2 emissions and climate-neutral industry,” said Jürgen Nowicki, CEO of Linde Engineering. “Together with BASF and SABIC, we have demonstrated how the balancing act of decarbonizing energy-intensive industrial sectors can be achieved. The STARBRIDGE technology brings the vision of an emission-free petrochemical industry a step closer.”

Based on the combined knowledge and intellectual property of the three parties collaborating to develop the new technologies, the demonstration unit in Ludwigshafen will be operated by BASF. Linde was responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the plant. Linde will in the future commercialize the developed technologies under the new trademark STARBRIDGE, enabling the petrochemical industry to decarbonize by replacing conventional fired technologies.
