INEOS Styrolution Selected to Showcase ABS Sustainable Solution at Arburg Technology Days 2024

INEOS Styrolution’s drop-in ABS solution Terluran ECO GP35 BC100 contains bio-attributed content for all three ABS monomers (styrene monomer, butadiene and acrylonitrile).

Arburg, a leading global manufacturer of plastic processing machines, selected INEOS Styrolution’s sustainable ABS Terluran ECO GP35 BC100 to demonstrate the capabilities of their latest generation of ALLROUNDER injection moulding machines at their recent Technology Days 2024 in Lossburg, Germany.

Arburg’s ALLROUNDER platforms

During the event, INEOS Styrolution’s materials were processed on two of Arburg’s injection moulding machines – the ALLROUNDER 520 H and the ALLROUNDER 1300 T.The ALLROUNDER 520 H offers cost and resource saving benefits, with increased production efficiency. Compared to conventional machines, the ALLROUNDER H reduces energy requirements by up to 50%. In addition, the required cooling water output can be reduced by up to 70% and the drying time is also reduced by around 40%. The ALLROUNDER 1300 T can be integrated into an automated production line. The machine enables the moulding together with non-plastics components – such as the metal blade in a vegetable slicer as an example.

INEOS Styrolution’s Terluran ECO BC100

Terluran ECO BC100 complies with all food contact regulations (EU, FDA, China, Japan). It is the world’s first fully bio-attributed ABS grade using renewable feedstock aligned with an ISCC-certified mass balance approach. The new ISCC-certified renewable feedstock can be used as a replacement for conventional feedstock for all three components in ABS (acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene monomer). This approach maximises the renewable feedstock in the material while minimising the CO2 footprint. In fact, the approach leads to a negative carbon footprint for this high-performing product.

Christian Homp, Manager of Applications at Arburg, says: “The drop-in characteristic of INEOS Styrolution’s material combined with our innovative injection moulding machines gives customers a convincing cost-effective sustainable solution.”

Christian Dietlein, Technical Service Manager EMEA at INEOS Styrolution, adds: “Arburg’s Technology Days was the perfect environment to experience both Arburg’s new efficient machines and our ABS material with the lowest CO2 footprint.”

Sabic and Jessa Hospital Achieve Successful Step Towards Creating Circular Polymers Based on Advanced Recycling of Used Medical Plastic

  • Collaboration with dialysis department at Jessa Hospital, Belgium, in proof-of-concept pilot project.
  • Project has shown that non-contaminated used medical plastic can be repurposed for advanced recyclingand subsequent production of medical grade polymers as part of SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE  portfolio.

SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of recycling used medical plastic back into the medical materials stream. The project was initiated together with the dialysis department at Jessa Hospital, one of the largest non-university medical cluster in the Limburg region of Flanders, Belgium. Serving as a pilot proof-of-concept, used medical plastic generated at Jessa’s hospitals was converted to pyrolysis oil in an advanced recycling process, delivering circular feedstock for SABIC’s production of TRUCIRCLE  polymers in medical grade quality with same performance, purity and physiological safety as virgin-based medical grade polymers. This is indispensable for medical approvals by regulators.

Lada Kurelec, General Manager, Polymers Technology and Innovation at SABIC, states:

“Working with Jessa Hospital has been an immensely rewarding experience, where we learned how individual belief in circularity can mobilize industry to work together. I value how this collaboration enabled creation of an ecosystem to collect and recycle non-contaminated medical waste in a very short time. Thanks to this collaboration, we are creating a certified circular TRUCIRCLE polymer portfolio able to serve the healthcare market. We are inviting other players in the value chain to join us and Jessa in this ground breaking initiative to accelerate the circularity of plastics in the medical industry.”

Advanced recycling technology and the vast experience gained through its TRUCIRCLE solutions put SABIC in a strong position to provide a circular solution designed to help Jessa Hospital reduce the environmental footprint of its medical products by avoiding their incineration after use. Approximately 85% of the used medical plastic generated at the hospital is not contaminated and therefore requires no specialized treatment. This allows it to be repurposed as feedstock for advanced recycling and subsequent production of high-quality medical grade polymers, saving virgin raw material and contributing to a more circular medical economy.

Karl Zwinnen, Project Engineer at Jessa adds:

“We are very pleased with the advanced and circular recycling approach enabled by SABIC to improve our medical waste management. The setup of an efficient collection system for used medical plastic has met with strong support among our medical and healthcare staff. Besides contributing to enhanced sustainability and circularity, the solution also has an enormous potential for reducing our disposal costs. We look forward to implementing it across all Jessa locations.”

As a result of this successful pilot project, SABIC is currently in the process of actively engaging partners to scale up operations and create a fully closed-loop recycling model for used medical plastic in larger volumes.

SABIC’s certified circular materials are produced using mass balance accounting according to the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS program, which defines a set of transparent rules for tracking the material flow across complex supply chains from the feedstock to final applications. The resulting certified circular polymers form part of the company’s TRUCIRCLE portfolio and services. SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE portfolio and services include certified circular polymers as well as design for recyclability, mechanically recycled products, certified renewable polymers from bio based feedstock, and closed loop initiatives to recycle plastic back into high-quality applications and help prevent valuable used plastics from becoming waste.

Mammoet Implements Innovative 360-Degree Safety System

Mobile crane camera setup alerts drivers to site hazards

Mammoet is working with Rietveld, a specialist in fleet management and vehicle and machine safety systems, on a joint project to protect drivers and road users when mobile cranes are moving and maneuvering.

The project combines three different safety technologies and was commissioned by Mammoet to support its customers to meet stricter safety regulations. Testing is currently being carried out on one of its new Liebherr LTM 1070-4.2 70t mobile cranes.

The three-tier system includes Rietveld’s OmniVue 360° camera system. Using a combination of cameras installed on the crane’s chassis, it generates real-time first and third-person images of the vehicle. This gives the driver a full 360-view from both inside and outside the cab, enabling them to see what pedestrians and other road users are seeing.

The second tier adds a series of sensors that detect people and obstacles within an adjustable safety radius around the crane. When the sensors detect a potential hazard, an acoustic signal alerts the driver. An LED warning panel also displays the section of the crane where the motion was detected.

The final tier, the ‘Halo’, draws a light boundary on the floor around the crane, giving those nearby a clear visual indication of the safe zone around it. This is especially important at sites where hearing protection is required. The boundary can be switched on and off manually and is set to automatically turn off when a certain speed is reached.

Ferdi Kivanc, Project Coordinator EMD at Mammoet, said:

“By combining these three systems, Mammoet will improve safety, minimize accidents and damage, and give greater confidence to crane operators to create safer working environments. We see this as a comprehensive system that will not only enhance crane safety, but also operator training in the future. Initial tests are promising, and I am very proud of the results.”

Frank Kanters, Account Manager at Rietveld, added:

“When Mammoet approached us with what it wanted to achieve, we were delighted to offer our expertise. By working with its engineers to test the integration of our collision-prevention technologies, we have created something unique in crane safety solutions. We look forward to developing the system further and progressing to eventual rollout.”

The Austrian technology leader for woven plastic packaging production and supplier of plastics recycling systems sets the focus on circular packaging solutions such as recycled big bags or PET bottles and presents a tape extrusion line for processing recycled PP.

On the occasion of this year’s Chinaplas in Shanghai from April 23 to 26, Starlinger is hosting an Open House at its production facility in nearby Taicang. A 1.5 hour drive away from Shanghai, visitors can see a starEX tape extrusion line with eqoCLEAN filter module in operation there. This machine setup allows the production of tapes with high shares of recycled polypropylene and CaCO3 – an important stepping stone on the way to a circular economy for raffia sacks and FIBCs.

The eqoCLEAN filter module is designed for producing high-quality PP tapes with post-consumer recycled PP. It enables, for example, the use of recycled polypropylene from post-consumer big bags to produce heavy-duty PP tape fabric for new big bags, thus closing the loop for this popular packaging application.

The eqoCLEAN module consists of a SPB single-piston power-backflush filter, a melt pump, and a second filter unit. The SPB filter has one piston and four cavities for filter screens. The automatic high-pressure backflushing process cleans the filter screens throroughly, increasing their lifetime and reducing machine downtime significantly. During the hydraulic power-backflush procedure the tape line operates at full production speed without interruption of the production process.

With the eqoCLEAN filter module, tapes containing high shares of CaCO3 and post-consumer rPP can be produced on Starlinger’s starEX tape extrusion lines without cutting back on production efficiency. This is essential for Starlinger’s “Circular Packaging” concept which promotes closed product cycles for big bags to reduce resource consumption and environmental pollution.

As a second highlight, the new RX 6.1pro circular loom for lightweight and heavy PP tape fabric will be on show at the Starlinger booth during Chinaplas. The middle-sized 6-shuttle loom puts the focus on sustainable packaging production combined with longer part lifetime and operator-friendly design. With production speeds of up to 920 picks per minute and more than 85 % production efficiency the loom delivers outstanding fabric quality from 50 to 140 g/m² (140 to 200 g/m² as heavy-duty version) while saving energy and resources.

A call for a circular economy

“With fast growing amounts of plastic waste in all parts of the world, a circular economy for plastic packaging is definitely called for”, says Harald Neumüller, CSO of Starlinger. “Starlinger focuses on developing technologies such as the starEX tape extrusion line with eqoCLEAN filter module that enable packaging producers to manufacture woven plastic packaging in the most sustainable way: Our machines use as little raw materials as possible, have very low energy consumption, achieve high efficiency and can process recycled materials”, he emphasises. “At the same time, we aim to close the packaging loop: Used plastic packaging needs to be collected, recycled and reused again – if possible in the same application without downcycling. With our plastics recycling lines a wide range of discarded plastics – be it post-consumer or industrial production scrap – can be turned into a valuable resource. Our PET recycling systems, for example, convert used PET bottles into food-grade recycled resin that can be used for producing new bottles. They are in operation at bottle-to-bottle recycling facilities all over the world.”

Closing the loop

Starlinger recycling technology offers recycling solutions for plastics such as PE, PP, PET, PES, PA, PLA or PS. Special technological features such as high-vacuum degassing or odour reduction ensure high-quality recycled pellets that can be used in packaging applications again. Starlinger’s PET bottle-to-bottle recycling process builds on more than 15 years of solid know-how in this field and has been approved for food-contact applications by a number of multinational brand owners as well as national and international authorities. Solid-state polycondensation and decontamination reactors supplied by Starlinger viscotec complement Starlinger’s PET recycling technology and guarantee highest pureness and optimum viscosity in the recycled PET pellets or flakes. The new viscoZERO melt phase decontamination reactor is designed to produce recycled food-grade resins from polyolefins and polystyrene as well as food grade and IV-increased recycled polyester.
