SABIC, a global leader in the chemicals industry, has teamed up with Guangdong Jinming Machinery Co., Ltd., a plastic packaging equipment manufacturer and Bolsas de los Altos, a leading plastic film and packaging converter to support growth of polyolefin based innovative applications in the flexible packaging segment. Engagement with value chain players remains critical to SABIC’s vision of bringing market driven innovation to customers. By exchanging mutual expertise on polymer technology and processing, this collaboration will secure the development of a robust applications pipeline based on current and future market trends.

Sustainability trends continue to transform the flexible packaging industry. As a result, incumbent film structures need to be updated to conform to latest circularity needs. A partnership involving SABIC’s deep materials knowledge, Jinming’s equipment manufacturing excellence and Bolsas’ converting capabilities can address these challenges. The collaboration will provide an outlet to test and validate performance of SABIC polyolefin resin products including polyethylene resin offerings from Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV) and from Trucircle, SABIC’s commitment to circularity for plastics. The collaborative efforts will feature installation of Jinming’s multilayer coextrusion machinery at Bolsas’ Mexico facility.

Covestro Launches Production for Vulkollan Raw Materials in Thailand

Meeting the growing demand for high performance elastomers

Covestro recently started up the production of Naphthylen-Diisocyanate (NDI) for the Vulkollan raw material at a newly built plant in its Map Ta Phut site in Thailand. The groundbreaking of the plant happened almost exactly two years ago, in late 2020. The investment was in the high mid double-digit million Euro range and is part of several investments of the company into cast polyurethane raw materials, for example at its Spanish site near Barcelona or at its site in Caojing near Shanghai in China.

“We believe in the growth of the cast elastomers market and want to meet the increasing demand. With this new production plant, we achieve a significant improvement of our global infrastructure and strengthen our presence for high-performance elastomers in the Asia-Pacific region,” says Sucheta Govil, Chief Commercial Officer at Covestro. “This investment also allows us to better serve our customers, improve our customer service and it supports the growth of applications and industries with high-end performance requirements.”

New features for the Fronius Wattpilot
One new feature is the OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) – a standardized interface for the management of charging stations. It enables charging reports to be created and load management to take place.

There’s also good news for those who like to keep an eye on what’s happening with all their energy flows: the Wattpilot is now shown in Fronius Solar.web. This gives users a uniform visualization and the option to troubleshoot directly in the free monitoring tool. In addition, the Wattpilot has been given a new look, with the modern housing providing a higher IP rating of IP55. What’s more, the WLAN range has been improved, increasing flexibility at the installation site.
All these enhancements are not only available for the existing versions, but also for two additional models: the Wattpilot Home 22 J and the Wattpilot Go J 22 AUS (for Australia).

Energy-optimized charging
The Dynamic Load Balancing feature will also become available for all Wattpilot charging stations at the end of the year. Electric vehicles are usually charged at high power, which means that, if several vehicles are connected at the same time, the maximum connected load of the household will often be exceeded. Dynamic Load Balancing ensures the power is optimally distributed, resulting in reliable charging without the need to invest in a large and expensive connection infrastructure. Up to three electric vehicles can be charged simultaneously in an energy-optimized manner using Dynamic Load Balancing. The energy required is dynamically distributed and controlled among the vehicles being charged. The Wattpilot can already detect when the household connected load is exceeded and reacts to this by giving priority to the loads in the house (heat pump, Ohmpilot, cooker, etc.).

Dream team: PV and e-mobility
E-mobility only really makes sense in combination with a photovoltaic system, since the cheapest way to charge electric vehicles is using self-generated photovoltaic power. Plus, the green electricity significantly improves the life cycle analysis.

Solvay Launches New Emulsifier To Boost Coatings And Adhesives Performance

Reactsurf 2490 addresses the perennial challenges of dirt pick-up and water whitening for higher-performing coatings and pressure sensitive adhesives

Solvay launched today Reactsurf 2490, a new APE-free polymerizable surfactant designed as a primary emulsifier for acrylic, vinyl-acrylic and styrene-acrylic latex systems. Reactsurf 2490 improves emulsion performance to deliver superior functional and aesthetic benefits in exterior coatings and pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), compared to conventional surfactants, even at high temperatures.

In addition to exterior coatings and pressure sensitive adhesives, other common uses of Reactsurf 2490 include paint binders, adhesives & sealants, textile & nonwoven binders, paper coatings, and building & construction applications.

“Exterior coatings and pressure sensitive adhesives are both prone to surfactant leaching,” explains Janice Ng, Coatings Asia Pacific Business Development Manager. “In exterior coatings exposed to harsh environmental conditions, leaching leads to dirt pick-up and water marks, while it leads to water whitening in PSAs. Reactsurf 2490 prevents surfactant migration, which improves water-whitening resistance for PSAs and dirt pick-up resistance for exterior coatings. This means clear label products retain their original appearance, and exterior surfaces remain clean and dirt free.”

Reactsurf 2490 is highly reactive and easily incorporated during the emulsion polymerization reaction. It eliminates the need for secondary emulsifiers, thereby facilitating fast and simple design of new latexes. Reach-certified and water-soluble, Reactsurf 2490 also ensures compliance with increasingly stringent regulatory requirements for APE-free solutions. Its optimal combination of properties includes low dynamic surface tension and critical micelle concentration, good particle size control, low grit and low foaming, in turn enabling better film hardness and antiblocking.

In tests of elastomeric coating binders, Reactsurf 2490 delivered improved blocking resistance and superior dirt pick-up resistance after three months of outdoor exposure. Initial tests also demonstrated improved water-whitening resistance in PSA applications.

Borealis and Verbund Erect New Photovoltaic Park to Supply Power to Borealis Operations in Schwechat, Austria

Borealis, one of the world’s leading providers of advanced and sustainable polyolefin solutions and a European front-runner in polyolefin recycling; and Verbund, Austria’s leading energy company and one of the largest producers of hydroelectricity in Europe, announce the installation of a new photovoltaic (PV) array in Schwechat, Austria. The new PV park, which will supply power to Borealis operations on site, is the second to have been jointly planned and implemented by the two companies. The output provided by the new facility moves Borealis closer to its aim of sourcing 100% of the electricity used in its own operations from renewable sources by the year 2030. The new joint project realised by Borealis and Verbund is clear evidence of the companies’ shared commitment to investing in a more environmentally friendly energy future.

Adding solar power to the Schwechat energy mix
The new solar PV park is located on an industrial plot at Borealis production operations in Schwechat. The construction phase began in May 2022, with completion anticipated by the end of the year; energy supply should commence soon thereafter. Covering a surface area of around 75,000 square meters, the new array will be composed of approximately 10,220 individual PV modules, each with a nominal power (peak power) of 460 watt-peak (Wp). Combined, the total installed power of the park is projected to reach around 4.7 megawatt-peak (MWp), with an annual energy yield of around 5.6 gigawatt hours (GWh). This is roughly comparable to the amount of energy consumed annually by 1,400 Austrian households. The entire energy output supplied by the new solar PV park will be used for Borealis production operations. The amount of renewable energy generated will reduce the annual CO2 emissions of this location by nearly 1,200 tons.

“Our partnership with Verbund allows us to do our part in expanding photovoltaic capacity in Austria, a crucial step in implementing a more sustainable energy agenda for the country as a whole,” says Thomas Gangl, Borealis CEO. “With a current total of three solar PV projects and multiple wind power purchase agreements across Europe, Borealis is making real progress towards realising our goal of sourcing 100% of electricity used in our own production operations from renewable energy sources by 2030 – this underpins how Borealis is re-inventing essentials for sustainable living.”

Agile and Fully Automated: Sidel’s Tailor-Made End-of-line Solution for Perrin Wines

Sidel has created a state-of-the-art end-of-line solution for Famille Perrin, one of France’s largest and most respected wine producers.

The new technologically advanced packing solution, offering automatic changeovers, is enabling the winemaker to increase production capacity and keep pace with its growing sales.

Sidel’s partnership with Perrin goes back 25 years to when bottling speeds were 6,000 bottles per hour. Since then, speeds have been progressively increased to cope with the strong international growth of Perrin’s business, and Sidel is continuing to help the wine producer modernise. Today, its tailored complete and automated end-of-line solution is enabling outputs of 14,000 bottles per hour. The combination of the Sidel Cermex FlexiPack auto-adjustable case packer, DiviArm distributor and the PalVite palletiser is offering Perrin maximum flexibility, with rapid format changeovers, as well as guaranteed reliability and bottle protection.

International success

Perrin owns 450 hectares of vineyards in the Provence region of France and exports Côtes du Rhône wine to the USA, Asia and China. The company’s sales have grown rapidly over the past twenty years, not only due to the success of its wines internationally but also due to the boom in premium rosés. To keep up with the continuous growth, Perrin increased its production shifts and decided to invest in modernising its end-of-line operations, with the aim of boosting capacity and productivity. Gaining the flexibility to handle a wide variety of bottles and formats, from half-bottles to magnums, was also key.

The need for a strong partner

With escalating sales, the level of sophistication and automation has become essential to this large-scale viticultural operation that now produces 35 million bottles a year.

“Innovating while keeping tradition is the rule in our family,” says Pierre Perrin, the firm’s Operations Director. Perrin knew it could depend on Sidel’s strong capacity for technological innovation as well as its engineering and design expertise, to find a holistic and custom-made solution. “Sidel has been with us while we have modernised our production tools and increased our hourly output. We naturally turned to them because they are specialists.”

The quality of service has confirmed the Perrin family’s choice of Sidel. “For me, in addition to the quality of their advice, what is really essential is the support they provide before, during and after the sale,” continues Pierre Perrin “After-sales service definitely accounts for 50% of our choice, and that’s why Sidel is one of our partners.”

Innovating for advanced flexibility

Perrin was the first Sidel customer to experience the Cermex FlexiPack, and its team willingly and actively collaborated with Sidel’s engineers to optimise its reliability and operation. The machine allows fast and seamless changeovers in just a few minutes thanks to the automatic adjustment of lanes and gripping head. The packer also enables the easy creation of new formats directly from its user-friendly human-machine interface (HMI) which guides users step by step. The FlexiPack is preceded by a DiviArm solution which allows a smooth lane distribution of the bottles at the infeed, preventing any shocks which could damage the labels.

For palletisation, Perrin further demonstrated its willingness to innovate with its choice of a robotised solution – a rarity in the wine sector, which was also selected for its flexibility. The compact PalVite 4000 is almost entirely controlled from the HMI, from format changeovers, requiring only one manual adjustment of the case turner at the palletiser infeed, to the creation of new palletising patterns.

A tailor-made solution

Developing a new solution in existing premises sometimes requires special skills – ones that Sidel has developed during its 40 years of experience in the wine and spirits sector. The challenge of the project was both to design a custom-made solution able to manage the diversity and specificity of Perrin’s formats, and to integrate it into a confined space.

“Installation was complex, since the building wasn’t designed for such large production lines. We had to push back the walls so that the machines would fit,” says Baptiste Andrieu, Technical Coordinator. “As well as the constraints in terms of the premises, we had quite specific bottle and case formats. Everybody adapted to our facilities and to our needs, and today it works well. Everything has been taken into account.”

From today’s achievements to tomorrow’s successes

The modernisation has succeeded in increasing production while at the same time reducing the amount of manual labour. In an operation previously requiring up to five operators, the new end of line needs just two technicians. This became invaluable during the pandemic, when Perrin could rely on this fully automated line, as well as Sidel’s built-in capacity to monitor and control the line remotely.

Sidel has designed its solution for Perrin with a margin for growth, anticipating both flourishing strong international sales and a continuing long-term partnership with this key wine industry partner. “Like all family businesses, we are loyal when we deal with partners who provide answers,” adds Pierre Perrin. “That was the case during this entire project, and this is why Sidel is our partner. “For 2022 we have an expected sales revenue of plus 13 percent for the Flexible and Printed Electronics Industry. The outlook for 2023 is even more positive, with an expected increase of 24 percent. This is the highest figure since this business climate survey was initiated in 2014”, reviews Dr. Klaus Hecker, OE-A Managing Director, the results of the latest business climate survey. A biannual survey conducted by OE-A (Organic and Printed Electronics Association), a Working Group within VDMA (Mechanical Engineering Industry Association). “But if the skies of our industry are really sunny or rather cloudy the next months will show. Challenges in the supply chain, rising energy costs, inflation and the Russian war in Ukraine are adding uncertainty to the pleasing forecast”, adds Klaus Hecker.

OE-A expects 24 percent sales growth for 2023 compared to 2022
With a turnover sales forecast of +13 percent for 2022 the result of the previous forecast from February 2022 (+ 12 percent) is validated. Nevertheless, the Russian war has its impact on the Flexible and Printed Electronics Industry. More than two thirds (68 percent) of the companies state, that they were negatively affected by the war in Ukraine. Nearly every company in the above two-thirds says it endures supply chain disruptions and a price increase.

Particularly challenging to source for the Printed Electronics (PE) Industry are electronic components and chemicals. The respondents do not expect the situation to improve in the next 6 months. This is especially challenging for printed electronics since the main targeted end user industries are Consumer Electronics, Automotive, Medical & Pharmaceutical and Building & Architecture.

Another preoccupying situation is the slower recovery of the markets and customer demand. Compared to the survey in February 2022, less companies have noticed a recovery in demand for the business in Europe and North America. More companies then in the survey before (27 percent compared to 24 percent) used or plan to use government and Corona support programs. “For the Asian continent the demand revival is expected to take even longer. This is tough for our industry and clouds the bright outlook of +24 percent sales growth along the entire value chain for 2023”, explains Klaus Hecker.

Sunny side up
Despite all ambiguities 2023 is a promising year for the Flexible and Printed Electronics Industry with respect to investments in production and R&D. More than 75 percent of the surveyed companies will increase investing in production and R&D activities in the upcoming half year. Furthermore, the employment situation is also encouraging: 88 percent of the responding companies plan for a stable employment situation, with 12 percent planning to increase their staff. “Despite all difficulties and hurdles in the next months the PE industry will continue to bloom and grow. Our industries superpower is a certain resilience and innovative strength, and I am looking forward to seeing the latest product innovations at electronica and LOPEC 2023”, summarizes Dr. Klaus Hecker.

Successful Trade Fair Appearance for Wire, Tube, GIFA and METEC Southeast Asia at Location Bangkok

the leading regional trade fairs for the wire, cable and tube & pipe sectors, wire and Tube Southeast Asia, presented their latest technologies concurrently with the foundry and metallurgy trade fairs, GIFA Southeast Asia and METEC Southeast Asia, at BITEC in Bangkok.

Owing to the extended ranges the trade fairs at the Bangkok location have strengthened their expertise as leading regional information and trading platforms. A total of 244 exhibitors from 32 countries travelled to Bangkok to demonstrate the innovative power in their key technologies. 85% of the exhibiting companies were of international origin.

Alongside the upstream supplier industries machinery, equipment, products and solutions from the iron, non-ferrous and steel industries as well as the wire, cable and pipe and tube sectors were on display.

To the tune of 6,000 trade visitors from 60 countries came to Bangkok, primarily from Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Vietnam and Singapore – plus 76 local visitor groups.

At 90% visitor satisfaction it became clear that both supply and demand corresponded to market needs.

wire and Tube Southeast Asia
Since 1997 the key players in the wire and cable sectors have presented themselves at wire and Tube SEA in Asia every two years.

On display here are machines and equipment for wire making, processing and wire finishing, accessories, measuring, control and test engineering as well as new and further developed special wires and cables. Machinery and technologies from the segments tube and pipe production, processing and finishing supplemented the ranges at Tube SEA.

The visitors of both trade fairs are producers, upstream suppliers to and buyers from the wire, cable, tube and pipe, automotive, oil, gas, construction, energy and electrical industries.

First appearance for GIFA and METEC Southeast Asia in 2022
For the first time, companies from the foundry and metallurgical sectors of industry showcased their technologies concurrently at GIFA Southeast Asia and METEC Southeast Asia – thereby completing the value chain of the manufacturing, metal-working and finishing industry.

The background to extending the industrial trade fairs in Asia was the rising demand for machinery, equipment and products for Southeast Asia’s growing infrastructure.

In view of the booming projects in the construction sector, the growing demand for products from iron and steel production and the rising demand for logistics and transport services the extension from two to four thematically interlocking trade fairs has proven to be a win-win for all parties involved.
