arburgXvision: Looking into the Digital Future!

arburgXvision: Looking into the Digital Future!

  • Live: arburgXvision Internet TV broadcast on 24 November 2022
  • Know-how: Expert talk on digitalisation in the plastics industry
  • Added value: networking increases productivity

The next episode of the interactive online live format “arburgXvision” goes on air. This time, experts will discuss and analyse the complex and exciting topic of “Digital Services – Opportunities and Risks of Digitalisation”.

The one-hour, German-language programme is primarily about networked communication in production, what exactly it can look like and what it ultimately offers customers.

The potential of 5G
One topic is Telekom’s new 5G Campus network, which Arburg presented for the first time as a pilot customer at the Technology Days at the end of June and also at the world’s leading trade fair K 2022 in October. The trade audience was shown how the data traffic of a machine functions securely, quickly and reliably via the private 5G network and the Arburg IIoT gateway (Industrial Internet of Things) without network cables. This is just one aspect of the almost unlimited digital possibilities. In addition, live guest Thomas Pöggel, Telekom Business Development Manager 5G Business Customers, will provide further interesting insights and outlooks.

Expert knowledge and an exciting real-life example
Stephan Reich, Director IT Digital Solutions, and Peter Kowalewski, Team Manager Digital Industrial Solutions Support, will be live guests in the Arburg studio. The experts from Arburg will explain which technology and services the company can already provide to its customers, for example via the “arburgXworld” customer portal, in order to make the transition to digitalisation as quickly and easily as possible with their own company. Which sub-aspects does a machine manufacturer like Arburg actually regard as digitalisation? What possibilities does networking offer and what about the security of the data? The contribution by fischerwerke, one of the market leaders for fastening systems, shows how all this can happen in real life and what potential digitalisation has. Here, the Arburg host computer system ALS is presented as a central tool for digitisation in practical use and how the data acquisition and evaluation of all injection moulding machines via the ALS works.

Digitisation pays off
If you want to remain competitive in the long run and in the future, you cannot avoid networking. This also applies to smaller plastics processors in particular. Arburg offers a solution for every customer with its modular system of individually customisable digitisation tools. The possibilities are discussed in detail in the programme. To name just a few key points: Production management, cloud services, artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning, automated processes, predictive maintenance and online training and education.

Participate interactively
Once again, viewers will be able to ask questions live via chat and actively participate in polls. So it’s worth tuning in:Anyone who doesn’t have time to watch the programme live at www.arburgxvision.com can of course catch up later at any time in the arburgXvision Media Centre, where all previous episodes are available to view. It’s definitely worth having a look!

Solvay Partners with French Start-Up Ostium in Single-Use Surgical Instruments Material Recycling

Solvay Partners with French Start-Up Ostium in Single-Use Surgical Instruments Material Recycling

Value chain collaboration aims to foster a circular ecosystem and reduce the carbon footprint of single-use surgical instruments molded in Ixef PARA

Solvay, a leading supplier of advanced materials, has teamed up with French start-up Ostium in a joint project designed to enable the mechanical recycling of end-of-life single-use surgical instruments molded in glass-fiber reinforced Ixef polyarylamide (PARA) from Solvay’s portfolio of specialty polymers.

The initiative is the first for valuable polymers to be recycled and upcycled from used healthcare devices, proving that the medical safety provided by high-performance polymers such as Solvay’s Ixef PARA in single-use surgical instruments, can be reconciled with the need for greater sustainability and resource efficiency.

“Our customers in the healthcare industry must meet strict regulatory demands, while at the same time striving to minimize the carbon footprint of their products and support the reduction of hospitals and clinics’ end-of-life waste,” says Claire Guerrero, Global Marketing Manager Sustainability at Solvay. “We identified a gap between these challenges, which prompted us to forge this unique collaboration for developing a breakthrough recycling process for used surgical instruments that are commonly disposed of by incineration rather than reclaiming their high material value. By controlling every step in the loop from the original Ixef PARA to the upcycled PARA compound, we will be able to ensure its high quality, purity, and performance for demanding downstream applications and can make a significant contribution to a more sustainable polymer economy.”

Ostium Group, a French start-up specializing in the design and manufacture of instruments for hip, knee, shoulder, and trauma orthopedic surgery, will supply hospitals with new custom surgical kits made with Ixef PARA and collect the contaminated instruments after use. This will also promote the replacement of metal surgical instruments with lightweight polymer designs and help medical facilities reduce their time and cost for sterilization, and disposal as well as lower their carbon footprint.

The partnership with a regionally recognized leader in the treatment and recycling of waste from healthcare activities with infectious risks, was key to developing a dedicated mechanical process to clean, sort, and grind the collected material, delivering high-quality polymer feedstock that can be used in the production of new polymers. In this way, end-of-life surgical instruments can become part of a circular ecosystem that prevents the loss of valuable material and reduces the consumption of fossil resources.

Finally, Solvay is evaluating upcycling options and how to integrate back this recycled feedstock into new high-performance PARA compounds. Initial trials have shown that the recycle-based PARA compound provides a very high level of performance, with up to 85% of flexural properties and no loss in excellent surface appearance when compared with the virgin grade, with the additional advantage of a lower carbon footprint.

Solvay Partners with French Start-Up Ostium in Single-Use Surgical Instruments Material Recycling.

In view of regulations in place in the healthcare market with constraints on the use of recycled materials, Solvay is targeting open-loop downstream solutions in which the recycled material will find a second life in high-end markets such as automotive and sports and leisure equipment.
