SABIC Launches Pilot Blockchain Project to Advance Emissions Tracking & Reductions Across Value Chains
SABIC, a global leader in the chemicals industry, has launched a pilot project with Circularise, a blockchain software provider, to evaluate the use of their technology in tracing the carbon footprint of specific material streams from end to end.
Generating and reporting Scope 3 emissions is notably complex and confronted by challenges with availability of reliable data. Accurate data on a company’s carbon footprint requires collaboration and data sharing across multiple value chain partners. Blockchain technology has emerged as a potentially efficient solution to improve the process that can bolster transparency and accountability while minimizing risk across supply chains.
SABIC’s project will employ Circularise’s technology to capture emissions across the value chain by deploying a consistent methodological and reporting framework accepted by the industry. Scope 1 and Scope 2 data captured at the material level can be used to generate Scope 3 CO2 emissions for the full value chain of targeted industries. In addition to increased transparency, the use of Circularise’s Smart Questioning technology will benefit SABIC’s entire value chain by reducing the administrative efforts associated with the data collection and providing access to upstream and downstream data provided by value chain participants, from recyclers to converters to original equipment manufacturers, among others.
“This blockchain pilot project reaffirms SABIC’s dedication to accelerating the sustainable transformation of our industry through strategic partnerships and innovative new technologies,” said Waleed Al-Shalfan, Vice President of Polymers Technology & Innovation at SABIC. “Accurately mapping emissions, especially Scope 3 emissions, will allow SABIC and others to identify and minimize hot spots along the value chain, a critical tool in our pathways to decarbonization. We encourage other upstream and downstream partners to join and consider how this technology can unlock sustainable growth at every level moving forward.”
“We’re proud to collaborate with SABIC in tackling the pivotal challenges of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions accounting, which encompass issues like information accessibility, confidentiality, and scalability of data sharing among suppliers,” said Mesbah Sabur, Founder of Circularise. “As part of this project, Circularise aims to pilot blockchain-powered digital product passports and help businesses to track product emissions on a large scale and over time, generating comprehensive product life cycle emission reports.”
This project marks another way in which SABIC is leveraging innovative partnerships to reduce emissions and help meet its commitment of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Earlier this year, SABIC joined Together for Sustainability (TfS), a procurement-driven initiative created by chemical companies with the goal of assessing, auditing, and improving sustainability practices within their supply chains. As a member of TfS, SABIC will foster collaboration around increasing transparency in upstream value chains to support further reductions in Scope 3 greenhouse emissions.
This collaboration with Circularise also marks SABIC’s second blockchain application project. Last year, SABIC launched a pilot project with Finboot, Plastic Energy, and Intraplás to evaluate the use of blockchain technology in supporting end-to-end digital traceability of circular feedstock in customer products.
FANUC’s ROBOSHOT Demo Showcases the Cutting Edge of Sustainability
Showcasing its end-to-end sustainability credentials from raw material handling to final packaging, FANUC UK will feature a live on-stand automated manufacturing cell at Interplas 2023 (stand D60, 26-28 September 2023, NEC, Birmingham). Comprising a FANUC all-electric ROBOSHOT injection moulding machine, a FANUC LR-10iA 6-axis robot arm and ancillary equipment provided by FANUC’s on-stand partner Hi-Tech Automation, the fully automated system will also display live data showing the amount of energy being used, as well as the cost to run the cell, to highlight the efficiency gains offered by the ROBOSHOT.
Protecting planet and profit
Sustainability is front of mind for injection moulding firms. Addressing this concern, FANUC aims to show Interplas visitors the ability of its ROBOSHOT machine to handle a wide range of materials, including bioplastic, as well as highlight the energy and cost savings compared with hydraulic alternatives.
“As the FANUC ROBOSHOT is all electric, it uses 50-70% less energy than hydraulic machines, and 10-15% less energy than other all-electric machines,” says Martin Grimshaw, ROBOSHOT Sales Manager for FANUC UK. “In fact, it has been proven to be one of the lowest energy consumptions worldwide and one of the lowest total costs of ownership on the market.”
With 60% of manufacturers reporting that out of control energy bills are now threatening their business1, being sustainable is no longer just a ‘nice to have’ but a business imperative. The demonstration cell at Interplas will be linked to a clamp meter which will measure in real time the amount of power the unit is drawing from the grid and display it live for visitors to see, as well as the value of that power in pounds and pence.
The ROBOSHOT also measures this data as standard and visitors will be invited to compare the two screens, to gauge the accuracy of the ROBOSHOT’s built-in energy meter. “We are looking forward to proving to Interplas visitors just how much energy can be saved with the ROBOSHOT, and the resulting financial benefits that it can offer,” explains Martin.
Full production lifecycle
The standard automation cell being showcased at Interplas features the FANUC ROBOSHOT S150iB at its heart. As well as low energy consumption, this CNC injection moulding machine offers repeatably high levels of consistency and accuracy, superior mould protection and rapid acceleration.
Live data showing the amount of energy used per unit will be displayed to highlight the efficiency gains offered by FANUC’s ROBOSHOT.
With system integration being a key talking point for the plastics industry, the ROBOSHOT will be tended at Interplas by a Standard Automation Cell from Hi-Tech, FANUC’s system integrator partner for the injection moulding sector. The system features the FANUC LR-10iA robot positioned on a linear rail to create a 7th axis, giving it full range of movement across and above the entire length of the cell.
“We are excited to show visitors what the ROBOSHOT can do and, just as importantly, demonstrate how the energy efficiency benefits extend across the entire manufacturing cell; from raw material handling to final packaging,” adds Martin.

Energy-efficient two-component injection moulding will be demonstrated by an Allrounder More 1600, equipped with two electric injection units, which will produce a container made of thermoplastic (PBT) and liquid silicone (LSR). The LSR dosing unit from Reinhardt Technik is integrated into the Gestica control system via OPC UA and the Euromap interface 82.3.
As an energy-efficient, resource-saving application and alternative to thermoforming, an all-electric Allrounder 720 A Ultimate packaging machine will be producing IML round cups with a wall thickness of only 0.37 millimetres. This is done by injection compression moulding, which also reduces the energy requirement and mould wear.
An IML process designed specifically for medical technology will be presented using labelled centrifuge tubes as an example. In addition to Arburg, partners Kebo, MCC Verstraete, Beck Automation and Intravis are involved in this innovative joint project involving an electric Allrounder 520 A with an 8-cavity mould.
Industrial additive manufacturing
A high-temperature Freeformer 750-3X, Arburg’s largest yet compact 3D printer, will be producing air diffusers from Ultem, original aerospace-approved plastic granules. An innovatiQ LiQ printer from for processing liquid silicone will also be presented from the ARBURGadditive division.
Ten additional exhibits on partner stands
Ten additional injection moulding exhibits on partner stands will demonstrate the wide range of applications for Arburg machine technology. These will include:
an Allrounder 1300 T rotary table machine that produces vegetable slicers by overmoulding metal blades with ABS (Maschinenfabrik Lauffer, Hall A3, Stand 3008),
an Allrounder 470 H hybrid machine that uses an 8-cavity mould with a special laser surface to produce closure caps from recycled PP (Barnes Group, Hall A1, Stand 1208) and
an electric Allrounder 370 A that processes solid silicone into cable ties (ACH, Halle A4, Stand 4307).
